چکیده

This paper introduces a new approach to database design theory. It presents the concept of partial functional dependency in the relational database framework. This new kind of dependency is an extension to the classical definition of functional dependency. The extension is carried out following two basic ideas. First, the new dependency works over relations (not over schemes). And, second, a relation can partially verify a classical dependency in the sense that only some tuples, called exceptions, break the dependency. Throughout this work, we use that dependency to decompose relations through a more flexible and general decomposition process, and by iterating this process, we find a mechanism to extract knowledge from the original relation. We also give algorithms to implement usual operations and relational system maintenance. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Knowledge-based spectroscopic assignment

Studying the energy level structure of di€erent molecules by means of spectroscopy is one of the ®elds in physics and chemistry. In this paper, we describe a knowledge-based system, molecular spectroscopic assignment assistant (MOSAA), which can assist researchers in the assignment of the far-infrared and infrared absorption peaks of the molecules in question by using the spectral information p...

Knowledge Engineering: Principles and Methods

This paper gives an overview of the development of the field of Knowledge Engineering over the last 15 years. We discuss the paradigm shift from a transfer view to a modeling view and describe two approaches which considerably shaped research in Knowledge Engineering: Role-limiting Methods and Generic Tasks. To illustrate various concepts and methods which evolved in recent years we describe th...

Smart card embedded information systems: a methodology for privacy oriented architectural design

The design of very small databases for smart cards and for portable embedded systems is deeply constrained by the peculiar features of the physical medium. Privacy concerns are relevant due to the fact that personal information may be stored on the card (e.g. medical records). We propose a joint approach to the logical and physical database design phases supporting the required security levels,...

Supporting Internet-scale multi-agent systems

The Internet provides a large-scale environment for (intelligent) software agents. Agents are autonomous (mobile) processes, capable of communication with other agents, interaction with the world, and adaptation to changes in their environment. Current approaches to support agents are not geared for large-scale settings. The near future holds thousands of agents, hosts, messages, and migratory ...

Consistent policy enforcement in distributed systems using mobile policies

This paper briefly traces the evolution of information system architectures from mainframe-connected terminals to distributed multi-tier architectures. It presents the challenges facing developers of multi-tier information systems in providing effective consistent data policy enforcement, such as access control in these architectures. Finally, it introduces ‘‘Mobile Policy’’ (MoP) as a potentia...
